Virtual or in person?

I was a virtual-tutoring skeptic prior to the pandemic. I was pleasantly surprised in 2020 how productive it was and how much my students liked it. Because it is one-on-one, virtual tutoring is much better than virtual class, wherein the teacher cannot see all the students at the same time to know if they are engaged.

For students who want to take advantage of the time, virtual tutoring has been very effective. It is also easy for me to create notes on my computer for students using color to help students connect ideas. I send these notes as a pdf, along with any handouts, links, or extra resources at the end of each virtual meeting.

In-person may be better for students who are not enthusiastic about meeting with a tutor, are easily distracted by electronic devices, or who prefer it for another reason.
